Moving the Goalposts- traditional and portable exhibitions.

‘Moving the Goalposts’ The History of Women’s Football in Britain (1881-onwards)

The ‘Moving the Goalposts’, History of Women’s Football in Britain exhibition, made its’ debut at The Peoples History Museum in Manchester from the 7th March- 15th May 2011. (Over 14,000 members of the general public viewed the exhibition). The project has subsequently been shown at the Rugby Museum and Art Gallery, Wembley Stadium and The ETIHAD stadium in Manchester.

The exhibition is not a ‘shooting star’ project but a long -standing scheme of work that will develop and transform over time. One of the main aims of the exhibition is to educate a new generation of young people to respect and understand the women’s game.

A team of artists has been selected to create work inspired by the players, teams, and events that have contributed to the history of women’s football. Their work includes; paintings, drawings, prints, photography and electronic graphics.

Artists- Jaskirt Dhaliwal, Olivia and Alison, Beccy Roberts, Jill Iliffe, Heather McGrath, Judith Yates, Stuart Gibbs, Ben Mosely, Colin Yates and Phil Vasili.

The exhibition features several layers of work including a ‘traditional’ fine-art exhibition, working alongside a portable exhibition displayer.

The portable exhibition displayer can be shown in a variety of locations, making contact with a new and often neglected audience.
It contains original artwork created by the team of professional artists, alongside artwork created by young people through a series of practical art workshops in schools. For youngsters to have the opportunity to display their work is a major incentive.

The information panels, outlining the ‘hidden-history’ of the women’s game have been written by the acclaimed writer Phil Vasili. Stuart Gibbs has also supplied original information regarding the infancy of the game.
